As a certified ISA (International Surfing Association) surf teacher…
…it is mandatory to do a refreshing course every two years: the ISA/ILS water safety course. The Pura Vida Lodge organizes the course every year in Mimizan Plage.
Location: Mimizan Plage, France
Mimizan and its surroundings are known for the endless beach breaks caused by winter storms leaving beautiful sandbanks behind. The ideal combination between working on your surf career and gaining surf experience is to hit the water as many times as possible. So of course we will try to surf as much as we can before, during and after the classes. It will be a busy week with first aid class, teaching skills, several exams and surfing on your own, but also with time to chill in the Pura Vida Lodge.
ISA/ILS water safety course
The refreshing course for lifesaver counts 40 hours. The course starts with a fitness test. This means participants should be fit. Besides CPR and first aid you are being taught several rescue techniques at sea with and without rescue board.
The training involves running, swimming and rescuing plus dragging casualties through the surf zone and up the beach using rescue boards. You will also learn about lifeguarding and first aid theory, basic life support, and spinal management. The exam on the last day is conducted by English ISA/ILS-examiners.
You will learn:
- Surf Coach Safety and Rescue techniques
- Aquatic First Aid, including appropriate response for a suspected spinal
injury when operating as single or partnered surf coach
- Casualty rescue and care techniques operating in an aquatic environment
- Understanding the beach/fluvial location where you will work as a coach
and the impact of water flow, tides, rips, weather conditions and other
beach and water users
You will be tested on:
- Fitness tests and releases
- Lifeguard skills knowledge and rescue
- Life support
- First Aid
